(EZER)

Genesis 2:18 reads, “then the Lord God said ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.’”

In Genesis, God chooses to call Eve a helper, an ezer kenedgo. The word ezer translates as “helper,” and the word kenedgo means “to accompany.” We quickly learn that God created women to accompany man, in order to help them.

But is that it? Were we destined to be measly helpers?

Not quite!  Something cool about the term ezer is that it is only used to reference women twice, but it is used to reference someone else many more time. It’s used to describe God throughout the Old Testament.

  • “There is none like God...who rides through the heavens to your help [ezer].” Deuteronomy 33:26

  • Happy are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord, the shield of your help [ezer] and the sword of your triumph!” Deuteronomy 33:29

  • “Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help [ezer] and our shield.” Psalm 33:20

  • “Blessed is he whose help [ezer] is the God of Jacob.” Psalm 146:5

The fact of the matter is being called ezer is no small or insulting thing. When you dive into the scripture and realize that God himself was called an ezer it quickly turns from being insignificant to a privilege.

Think about the main quality God demonstrates as a helper: He walks beside us as a source of strength and support.

That’s exactly what the purpose of this magazine, this community, is. To provide a community that supports one another and helps one another grow, all while propelling the gospel forward.
